I am just going to state that i am overly thrilled with the performance of the stock 4.9. As far as comparison with us and the v-8' s or the other 6 cylinder, the 300 is far more of a reliable performer and kin to a tractor motor. It definitely transforms a truck into a tool, and that is what real users of trucks should be looking for anyway. It may not have the aftermarket following or the appeal of a v-8, but the working man can count on it to get the job done every day. The design of it is incredible. Just the fact that it has timing gears and not a belt or chain to snap really shows the intentions of Ford in making us a reliable workhorse to count on at 5 a.m. Anyways I'm going to bed I've had one too many.... Thanks for the great advice today and I'm glad I found this forum without the stupid rants of guys who just want to talk bullcrap and obviously know nothing about actual mechanics(craigslist se ohio ahem).
Found out these I-6's were used in UPS trucks and in airport tugs, the ones pulling and spotting airliners. Works for them = works for me.
And you know, it's not that these motors are some kind of beastly small block. When it comes down to it, the 300 is very stubborn! It's either going to move that load, or break something trying. You don't really feel anything when you over load your bed. I get annoyed with my truck's slow nature sometimes, but I'm grateful to have a realiable I6.
By the way, what is a good answer to "That is the kind of motor you need to have!" or, "You should put a 302 or 351 in that thing!" My dad keeps telling me this anytime he sees a beastly V8. I'd like to have one, but I feel like he's insulting my motor. What's a good answer without being disrespectful? This doesn't just apply to my dad. Other people say the same thing. I never really know what to say to it.
I have that same problem Bill. My father and some friends wonder why I went with the I-6. For me it all comes down to personal preference. If you want a mildly fuel efficient, hard working, brutally reliable motor its gotta be the I6. If its shock and awe your after you need a V-8. That's why you gotta do like me and have both! An I-6 is more practical.

I'd tell him you are satisfied knowing that you can't lug that motor down, will pull anything you put behind it, no matter if you have to go slow, and even though you can do all that, you get respectable gas mileage, and unarguable reliability. You can't help but love the 300-6. BTW, you have 4.10's if I'm not mistaken. You have one hell of a pulling set up.
And since I do have a V8, I'd just like to throw in that my motor can move anything, even though it may not be fast at all with a heavy load behind it. I feel the same way about my small V8 like you all do with your big 6. I wouldn't feel that way if I had 3.08's or less, an automatic or 4-speed/5-speed with overdrive, but with my transmission... I can also move anything, or something will break. 1st gear is 6.69:1, and when I go into 4x4 low... wow, something will have to break before my truck won't move. Not comparing, just wanted to say :-) Keeping it friendly.
I absolutely love all these engines, the 300-6, the 302, and the 351w. Not listed in best to worst, or worst to best, I'm listing by cubes, btw.
Here Here. All hale the I6 they are a mule and will get the job done why do you think any serious diesel is an I 6 I glad there a place like this were people don't laugh at you for wanting to run one
i fully agree, i have hauled obscene quantity's of sand, rock and patio stones, aswell as cars and other assorted junk, when i bought the truck i gave it 6mos before it was blown up, be damned i tell ya, 2 years later and it was STILL running strong n slow. took a lady pulling out in front of me and getting tboned to kill my truck, although the motor was still running in -17F temps while the police sorted everything out! glad it was there to keep me warm!
now i have a 92 4x4 powered by a 300 6, i was going to get a chevy truck next but my 92 came up and i snagged it! love my I6!!!

I'd say the 300 and 302 pull the same. For a small V8 a 302 is powerful. Yours pulls like a tractor with that kind of gearing. You almost have to have a 302 with gearing that low just to cruise at highway speeds, due to needing power in the upper RPM's.
What you say is true but I still can't tell him that. He's a Diehard V8 guy and just doesn't understand the attraction there. He's all about what goes fast and how many ponies.
I have a 4.11 gear ratio, you are correct! I got so used to running the 4.11 with short tires I no longer feel like I'm geared low enough with my 31 inchers. But it does work hard. It's a good combo for an all around work truck. I can cruise at 60 / 70 and still launch hard off the line when I need to.
Just got home from work so forgive me if I missed something, I'm beat!
What other engine can take off in 3rd gear with a 750lb load? Ive 3.55
All torque, No speed. Thats all my 'ol ford shall need.
when my slave went i had to get to work (35km highway/city 4 street lights and 3 stop signs) and the only gear i had was 4th and reverse...right now i got a 75 dana 44 front axle 2 front fenders front valence and front bumper off my truck all in the bed and take off in 4th if i had to and it still climbs very large piles of snow and crawls over hard wavy wacky drifts... but my trans. is shot to hell and its gotta make it 1 more month till i can get a new one to replace it so i gotta take er easy
My buddy, who is a mechanic and once worked at a Ford dealership, once commented on what you hear from the chevy/dodge/etc. boys: FORD = Found On Road Dead.
The great thing about what he said is this:
Sure you see a Ford on the roadside every once and awhile, but it was all of the abuse and misuse leading up to it for years that got it there. The experience that I have had with the aforementioned others is really true. Dodges do have some *****, but they are unreliable as all hell. And chevies, if you can drive over all the squeks and rattles, if they do throw a code it actually affects the way the thing will run. A Ford, however, will throw a code, but you would never know because it just doesn't have any effect on the way the thing runs. I do believe this holds true for all the Ford vehicles, because I have driven a few Mustangs, a couple trucks, and a Tempo that caught on fire and still made it home. Flaming. Through the interior vents.
