well ive tried to search this out and i thought i had some good info to try to look at this myself but im back to square one. i have a 2004 explorer 4x4 v8 and i was backing out of my driveway and i heard a popping sound and it sounded like my driveshaft came apart ( not really) and when i turned the wheel it would damn near stop the truck in its tracks. so i assumed it is stuck in 4x4. the 4x4 high light flashes off and on. so i tried to find the sensors on the transfer case ( hall sensors?) and looked on the diffs but i see no sensors. there is a wire ( a single wire ) just to the right of the high-low motor but that is not coming out. so any help or advice would be great on this. also my abs light is stuck on -i dont know if this is related or not because the brakes are in pretty bad shape( replacing soon). thanks for any help! chris
The ABS wheel speed sensors send data to the ABS module and to the 4X4 control module. It's possible that you have a bad WSS that is causing both problems. If you have a bad front wheel bearing it could also cause the sensor on that wheel to malfunction. I suggest you call around to find a brake shop that has the equipment to diagnose Ford ABS codes. Get it figured out soon before you break something in the transfer case. Let us know what you find out. Good luck!
ok, thanks for the reply. i have to take the truck in to the dealer to get the wheel bearings done and maybe they could tell me what it is. its my wifes truck and she doesnt tell me anythings wrong until its to late. i found the wheel bearings were going bad when i drove it and i asked her if she hears that growling noise in the front end and she says she dont hear anything. thanks again i will post what the conclusion is. chris
Could be the GEM (Generic Electronic Module). It has a hand in the control all sorts of things including 4WD. I had a stuck in 4WD problem on my 2003 F-250 that I could not diagnose. I ended up bumping it back into 2WD by unplugging the swith at the transfer case and running 12V's from the battery to the swith until I got it back intot 2WD. I left it unpliugged and drove it that way for about 6 months before I was able to sort out what had happened. Turne put the GEN had some corrosion on the circuit board. Not sure how that happend since it is located up under the dash behind the glove box on that vehicle. In any case, it was areal easy fix once I was able borrow a good GEM to confirm it was the problem.
In your case it could be something with the ABS sensors. I seem to recall chasing down that road for a while thinking it was a bad hub but it did turn out to eb the GEM. I do not ecall having the ABS light problem though I canot say for certain that I did not have it either. Sorry buyt this was a couple of years ago so I don't recall with the calrity I'd like to have to help you.
