Rack Going Belly Up?

I have leaks of power steering fluid from the tie rod boots on both sides of my rack. It's on a 1998 4WD Explorer with 158K miles. Does this mean the rack needs to be replaced or is there another (cheaper) fix? If the rack is dying, how long do I have before I have to bite the bullet?

Thanks,

Kite

The rack should be replaced. The boot are merely dust boots to keep dust out, not fluid in. Sounds like the seals in the rack are shot so the fluid will come out the boots. As long as you keep fluid in the system, the rack will probably be ok. It's not going to get any better and the leak will probably get worse.

If you do it yourself, the rack is about $130, and you will need to have the front end aligned after you install the new one. Here's a link to the procedure: AutoZone.com | Vehicle Selection - Year

Keep in mind that the sealer will also go thru the power steering pump which can end up causing damage to the pump.
