After market intakes

Ive been looking at several brands of aftermarket intakes and noticed that most make an open and cold air intake. What is the advantage to the cold air intake/is it a noticeable advantage? Also, I havent found where any of the brands advertise a cold air system for the 4.2L. Does anyone know of a cold air intake that fits a 4.2L?

Air intakes will rarely free up any power at all, so either one will most likely be about the same. The most power I've ever heard from an air intake system is 5-6 HP. Save your money for some serious stuff, like a cam and some lower ratio rear end gears. TK

Cold-air kits typically gather air from inside the fenderwell, where the air is cooler and you get a bit better air flow. Open elements are just that, an uncovered filter in about the same location as the stocker. The cold air will free up more ponies than the open element, but it will only be a seat of the pants feel. I'd concentrate more on throttle body and mass-air flow sensor in terms of intake bolt ons.

It appears that none of these products are made for the 4.2L, that or maybe just that site doesnt have them. Do you know if these bolt ons are available for the 4.2L. Same with the cold air intake not available for the 4.2L.

Also, do intakes really not help much? I figured that removing the restricting air intake from the factory would allow the engine to breath better and produce more hp.

There's not many company's who make add-ons for base engine's. For mustangs, yes, but anything else you'd be hard pressed. K&N should make an FIPK for the v-6, also check out BBK and others like that. I thought i saw a 4.2L with a cold-air kit before, but that was a couple years ago. But like i said before, your best bet for power is gonna come from a bigger TB, although you'd have to do a lil fabing for that, and about a 75-80mm MAF. You can find those types of things just about anywhere. A cheapy is removing the air intake silencer, i believe the trucks have these, i know the ford cars do.
