Just recently A ice storm came through Missouri and I needed the 4x4. I got the hubs locked in,but can't unlock the passenger side because the plastic **** broke off.I left the driverside locked in and am going from 4x4 to 2wheel with the shifter. Can I just replace the plastic **** on the passenger side or do I have to install a new manual hub?
I just realized I posted this question in the wrong place. My truck is a 85 F-250 4x4 with 460,C-6 with 410 gears.Should have posted in the 80-85 forum, but any advice will still help.
honestly i would just upgrade them whale you are doing it. its a few allen heads , a snap ring and a large lock ring to change them all you need is an allen wrench, a snap ring plier (it makes it easy but a pair of small pick's will work to) and 2 small flat blade screwdrivers.
i bought mile marker stainless hubs for mine from summit racing, pretty cheap for an all metal hub set. it was like $60 or so. if none of your factory cap screws snap off it takes mabey 1/2 to change both if you have ever had experence pulling a hub. mabey an hour if its your first time.
if you do get mile markers get some small orings from the part store to seal the bolt heads against the hub. ran me under a $1 for both sides.
Or you could go to the junkyard and replace the whole cap. Its kinda difficult to get the plastic turn dial out of the chrome piece. Just pull the chrome cap off a truck (6 allen head bolts) and it will go right onto your truck.
