all I can say is mine exhaust is 3" all the way back and it is not to loud. if i am going 40 mph and drop it into 2nd it will rapp like a glass pack. I personally don't drive like that unless I want to hear it, u know like when there is a dodge next to me. lol
I have a 88 7.3 non-turbo with the stock down pipe end dual 5 inch stacks. Mine is like a BIG gasser all the time, except when I hammer down, then the deisel in it comes to life and the smoke rolls. I love the sound of my truck and the only reason I would change it is to turbo it and get that HOT whistle!
1) The difference in power between a straight pipe and a system with good muffler is nil. There's such a thing as "sound tuning" where the pipes and muffler work together to offer a nice sound, but without the raspy side effects, and all the power. To me straight pipes are kinda like the so-so band that plays extra loud to cover up their lack of musical talent.
2) Too big a pipe is detrimental to low end torque and makes more noise.
3) Too loud a truck results in hearing loss. I can tell you firsthand ... you'll regret the loss of hearing one day. I have a pretty good case of tinnitus (continuous ringing ears) from all the loud stuff in my life, plus a significant loss of hearing. No cure. Some of that was "military emergency" related stuff from 40 years ago, but a majority was my own stupidity and laziness. You're all big boys. You can makeup your own minds, like I did, and pay the price.
alls i'll say is that if you straight pipe it and don't like the sound, it isn't that much trouble to cut a section of pipe out and put a muffler in. i'd try it, just for the grins and giggles of doing it. BTW, hearing is overrated anyway. LOL
I'm running mine straight piped off the down pipe, I believe it's all 3", but it was like that when I bought it. It terminates under the bed behind the axle for now, and it's not loud to me at all. In fact, it's quieter than my 460 truck, which has true duals and thrush welded mufflers. I'll better know if I need to muffle it once I get my stacks.
