2.8 V6 conversion

I have a 1986 2.8 v6 from a van and I'm hoping to put it into an old project car with a standard transmission. It doesn't need to meet any emission standards. I bought an offy intake and 4 bbl carb. Does anyone know what would be required to convert and remove all sensors etc? I'd like to make it run and run as simply as possible. Is it possible to make this engine run like an old engine before all the polution control stuff was added?

My former truck was an '84 Ranger with a 2.8L V6. The PO did a little "butchering" to the wiring to the carb and other emissions stuff and it didn't run quite right. After driving it for a while, I had a cylinder lose compression so I did a rebuild and while I was at it, I did what you want to do... removed all the emissions crap.

I did the offy 4V, Holley 390 carb, crane cam, Edelbrock headers, and some other stuff. I went to Advance Auto and bought a distributor for something like a 1976 Mustang with a 2.8L. I also bought an old Duraspark II ignition box and a coil and wired it up like the old style ignition. It worked great.

When you get rid of the stock intake and carb, you'll be rid of most of the sensors and emissions stuff.

If you need some more info, I can probably dig it up in the next day or so (part numbers and maybe some wiring diagrams..?).

1975 StroppeBaja, many thanks for great response! You've given me hope that I can figure out a good way to do this. Also, super pics. If you can easily locate any other info like you mentioned, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again, JR66

Cool. I actually posted another reply with several links to more information but it is either still awaiting moderator approval or it got denied. I guess it was because the post contained several links, not sure. Anyway, I'll re-find the info and pm it to you.

I'll also look around and try to dig up some part numbers and such today.

Edit.. looks like you aren't able to accept pm's yet. Maybe due to your post count. If you drop me an email (you can find it at the bottom of my Ranger webpage) and email the links back to you.

Edit #2.. here's the main link I wanted you to see...

Just one tip on this: Crane doesn't offer 2.8 cams anymore (that I could find, might be special order?), but CompCams does. Offyparts.com sells the intakes still. I had been looking into some of this as well as how to beef up the ol' 2.8 if I ever get an older Ranger or BII - even to consider using a 2.9 crank, rods, and pistons or other combinations, even as extreme as stroking it with a 4.0 crank. There is some discussion on this in the 2.6,2.8, 2.9, 4.0 V6 forum

If using points is acceptable, you can buy a distributor for an early Capri with 2.8, I think 1973 or earlier.

Jason:
That's a pretty nice engine and even nicer stand. It looks like it has a geared crank to rotate the engine.
The Holley looks huge on that engine.

Thanks! It was a really fun little truck in its hayday. Sounded pretty cool too with the Crane cam in there lopin and the Borla rumblin. Many people asked me if it had a V8 in it.

Yeah, that's my Dad's engine stand. He scored it a long time ago. I think it was originally for heavy equipment engines. From what I hear it used to have a gear setup like that on each end to hold up the heavier engines. Someone modified it along the way to only have the gear on one end, but it works great. Its holdin the 351W for my '75 Bronco right now.

How to upgrade my Ford Bronco II 1895 Eddie Bauer 2.8l

Excellent project. I have the similar truck with 40,000 miles. So I´m going to travel to MIA on June, so I wonder if you could help me saying what going first to buy in performance parts. This 2.8L is too smoke so I need at least 20HP more... is there some shops nearest to MIA ?

Thanks.
