Steering Box Bolt Sizes

Hi all, trying to replace my steering gear. This is a '79 F100, 4x2 with power steering. Does anyone know the socket size I need for the large nut that goes over the pitman arm on the bottom of the box? It measures 1-1/4" but I can't slip my 1-1/4" socket over it for the life of me. It's not metric is it? I'd be really surprised. I also can't figure out the size for the ragjoint coupler, at the top of the box. It looks like it might be a 12-point hex head but I'm not sure. 1/2" is too big, 7/16" is too small...a 12 mm seemed to fit but slipped off when I went at it. If anyone can help me out on these sizes, that'd really help me out. It would save me the trouble of guessing and buying other sockets. Thanks guys

Update - the ragjoint bolt is for sure a 7/16" 12-point, but I'm still at a loss on the pitman arm bolt. I tried my 1-5/16" socket and it was way too loose. If this thing is metric, I'm going to be pretty surprised!

Rag joint bolt is correct. 7/16. Don't ask me why a 12-point fit, or better yet, why do I have 12-pt sockets?

I don't remember if 32mm was correct, but I'm not surprised. SOME things on our dentsides are metric. IIRC Ford start using metric in late 70s. Well, that, or 30 years of elements changed the size on that pitman arm bolt.

As original:

380771S101 .. Sector Shaft to Pitman Arm Nut

National Fine Thread / 7/8" -14 / Width across the flats = 1 19/64" / 7/16" thick / Grade 8.

There are very...very few metric parts on these trucks. Most of the hardware dates back to the 1960's and 1950's.

Metric Ford hardware part numbers are unique.

If the hardware part number begins with a letter = metric

If with a number, the part is not metric.

btw: This same nut fits 1965 and later Galaxies, LTD's, Crown Vics thru 2002, Bird's, Mustangs and darn near everything else.

Thanks so much guys. Thanks for that part number Bill - makes sense that it was SAE size. The 32 mm got the job done, but didn't feel quite right. I got it finished up today.
