How will timing affect running ?

Hey guys,

Can timing being advanced to far cause a rough idle and a loud knocking.
Just put in new injectors and noticed more of a knocking rather loud at idle.
The idle rpm has also dropped to almost 500pm. IP pump might be getting weak bc of the new injectors?

Also how far in inches roughly shoud it be advanced the one on mine, havent touched it, is about 3/8" past the mark. Seems like alot to me but idk. My experience with timing other things is that a little goes a long way.

Thanks guys.

Yes it can. It will hurt power, mileage and can cause engine damage if it is excessive. You might try backing the timing off a little to where the noise goes away. Would be a good idea to have it timed if you can.

Did you replace them with the Turbo (G code, I believe) injectors?

3/8 sounds like alot to me. Thought I read on here that it should be no more than the width of the mark. I maybe wrong but if so one the guys with much more experiance than will be along soon.

Yea i put g codes. Its running good but I've never driven another one so idk if the power is good or not. The knocking is alot louder since i put the injectors in.

G codes have higher pop off pressures and may be taxing the old IP to the max.

First move, set the idle speed back up to 700 - 750 RPM, passenger side of the IP.

The static timing marks will get the engine running.
Dynamic timing gets the timing where it needs to be.

3/8" is a lot though.

The knock could be from the RPM to low, to much timing is more of a rattle like preignition on a gasser.

Ok. I'll set up the idle. It does sound like a gasser pre igniting. I just always call it a knock. I'm going to set the timing tommorow. I may just end up buying a new pump. I thought i might have to.
Where did u get urs dave? Is it one from DPS

I bought a new one from Ford, then took it to the local pump shop for some mods.

trust me daves running way more than 3650 and i bet daves pump is as good if not better than a moose pump, my dads 6.9 will bounch on 3800 all day long with the stock ip not tuched the governer, some have lower rpm settings, my 6.9 sound like its going to suck the hood in and take you with it when i hit the governer( so i think its taching 3800 or more) but you risk blowing your engine if its not in good shape. i have heard people say there feels like it looses power after 3000 rpm, but mine pulls hard all the way till it cuts out.
