If tomorrow your 6.0L was gone, but you were left with all the cash you have ever spent on it back in your pocket...what would you purchase under the following guidlines:
1: It cannot be another 6.0L
2: It still has to be warrantied,(low enough miles) but not neccessarily new.
3: Must be 4wd and have 4 doors.
4: Can handily tow 9500lbs. over steep mountians.
5: Cannot cost anymore than you were left for the original truck.
I'd choose #6, and buy an other 6.0 ;
or choose #7 and spend the money to find the original truck.....
Seriously I put a little more thought in it, and it is hard to choose. One year ago I've had an accident with my truck, and we were not sure if my truck will be totaled or not. I told myself, that no matter what, my next truck will be a 6.0 for sure. Fortunately I've got my truck back!
My buddy has an 08 250 and i definately would upgrade from mine to an 08 and my 06 has been flawless. Dont think i would own one outside of warranty though! Too much going on under that hood.
uh, well considering what i know now that i bought a 6.0 as my first diesel... i'd stick with it. i love the 6.0, would rather avoid the 6.4, and in ADDITION to my 6.0 i have now, i might ADD a 7.3 or *GASP* a cummins dodge (older, as in no newer than 02). and the 7.3 or 5.9 would be b/c the wife doesn't understand maintenance and such, i don't know that she'd do well with a 6.0, and i couldn't afford an 05 or newer...

No offense, but I seriouly wanted choices other than the 6.0L...meaning a reliable...or mostly reliable truck.
I have been looking and have joined a lot of other forums, but gotten little in the way of honest reccomendations...and I know you can have a Lemon with any make and model, but some just have better track records.
I hate to go back to a gasser, but that's an option too. If I did that it might be a Tundra, but luckily I'll get to tow my trailer with one of those prior to deciding this summer.
Now being for real, i would find a low mileage 7.3L and call it a day. If i were to get a cummins, i would honestly keep it above an 02 because quality control didnt seem to exist on the 94-02 dodge trucks. Just my opinion. Seen too many of them where the truck is held together with zip ties and duct tape. But, they do have a Cummins under the hood. All 4 d/maxs have been around have been good trucks. They were all 05 and higher models with over 150k with no motor or drivetrain issues. The one we actually put to work died at 155k. I am a diesel nut, whether it be a cummins, duramax, or powerstroke. I am brand loyal to a Ford because they actually make a truck!

If I had to buy other then a Ford (owned Ford Diesel trucks since 1989) It would be a Dodge 5.9 CR
hmmmmm....If my 6.0 ever keels over and dies I think I'm going to have to take the money I would lose on trade in and Destoke this baby and put a Cummins in it. I've always wanted to do it. Don't get me wrong I love my 6.0 it's just those times it drops 2-6 thousand dollar repairs in my lap...I get annoyed but I keep fixing the old girl.

I'm not opposed to another Ford, just another 6.0L
On the Dodge forum they reccomended the Duramax '06-'07.5 LMM...this was what they also reccomended on the Chevy forum. Two friend who operate cattle ranches have the Duramaxes and both have said the '06s they had were/are the only ones that have been trouble free, although none of theirs have had anywhere near the trouble I've had with mine.
Some have suggested the 6.4L...whereas I don't see a lot of major problems with that either...just really no direction at this point and I've been studying this for about 2 months now.
My friend has the Tundra and pulls quite often long trips out of state and loves it. He has offered to let me pull my rig loaded, on a hot day, up a grade near here that is 7% for 4-5 miles to see how it does...I'm just leery about gassers from prior towing experience.
Now today I talk to this guy who says his is worthless for towing even lighter loads...so I don't know. At least I'll get to try it out first hand.

As much as it deeply pains me to say, the LMM is a very impressive engine and has proven itself very very well. As a GM deisel tech the LMM would be on the top of my list for your needs. It doesnt fit my needs due to the IFS and its too quiet for my liking.
