use oil between changes

I just brought 2001 f=150 4x4 auto,5.4L,93000 miles, has k&n filter, flow master exhaust, change oil and filter,5w20 after about 3000 miles it was 1 1/2 quarts low, Engine runs good and has power, don't seem to smoke, but it did smoke when I started it up after put in oil at oil change,Do you think oil (5w20) is to light? anything you think I need to do ??

Welcome to FTE rjlitch! Do not use anything but 5W20 weight oil in your truck and use a Motorcraft oil filter. Oil consumption of a quart every 1000 miles is considered to be normal by the Ford Motor Co. Good luck!

Usually I'm a 5w20 all the way, but I think it would at least be worth a try to use 5w30 and see if there is a difference. If not, then go back to the 20.

now thats not completely true. my 92 Flareside doesnt use any oil at all. not a single. doesnt leak any either. but how could you let your engine get a quart and half low. dont you check the oil level between oil changes? i check once a week even though i know it doesnt use any i still check just to make sure.

After 4 ford trucks with 7.5l, 5.0L, 4.9L, and my 5.4L...all have consumed oil and all (except the 460) were non-leakers. All my VW's in the past and the wife's old Honda and Jeep drank a bit of oil......guess you are one of the lucky ones.

well im not the only one. my best friend eric has a 92 F150 also with a 5.0 and it doesnt leak or use any oil, but it only has 88,xxx miles on it. now my dads 95 w/ a 5.0 it leaks and maybe uses a half a quart every 3 thou. miles. it has 130,xxx miles on it. My neighbors 89 F250 w/ a 460 uses none and leaks none it has 250,xxx miles on it and my friend has an 80 F150 w/ a 300 I6 w/325,xxx miles and it only uses 1 quart every oil change. So idk i guess its just wierd that im around this many vehicles that dont use any oil or barely uses oil.
