What would one have to do to swap a old 351W for a newer 300 inline? Would this work? Would it have enough power to run up and down the mountains? I live in the mountains and the roads are sometimes pretty steep. i have a c6 auto transmission and 4x4. Thanks for any reply.
You could do it. You would have to get new motor mounts, new flywheel, possibly new starter. Probably a differernt fuel pump. All in all why would you want to change to a smaller motor? Your not gonna get any better fuel economy if the roads are that steep.
i was thinking about doing it because my uncle had a 94' f-150 with a 4.9L in it but wrecked it. The motor only had 87k miles on it and my old motor has 300k miles on it. But would it be cheaper to rebuild my engine i have now?
my inline does pretty good here in the hills (arkansas) and i never have to take it out of 4th, milage varies between 15-20.... and although mine was blown at 100k by the PO, they say they'll run for hundreds of thousands of miles....

depends on what you want if you want a motor that will never lay down and will pull on the mountains all the time but not possibly go fast the 300 is the way to go. if you want all the same but the ability to go fast. rebuild the 351W.
if the 351's still kicking then dont even consider it. For what it would cost to swap them you could sell the I6 complete and take that money plus what youd spend in flywheels and fuel pumps and crap to put towards a reman 351w. It should cost about the same and be less effort with better results
The hills in Arkansas must not be that big because there is no way I get near that good of mileage in Minnesota. I get like 10-13 with the hills we have and when I am on the high way I get right around 21-23 from Minnesota back to INdiana on the highway. I would assume you would get the kind of miles per gallon that I am getting here if your really in the mountians. I would just sell the 300 and look for a 351 if yours is dying.
