Last night I was cleaning the wheels on my truck and I got a little carried away(as usual). So I spray some degreaser on the motor wait two minutes and hose it off. I let it dry and try to crank it over and it will turn over but not start. I expected this as I have done things of this nature before. I let it sit for about three hours and it starts with some belt noise and idles fine. I wanted to let it warm up but I was in a hurry and the parking break doesn't work so I shut it off.
I wanted to drive it to work today (the wheels look great) and it starts and stutters for about a mile so I turn it around and park it.
I am creating a check list in my head and was hoping you could add to it.
The truck is a 1995 4X4 351 5 speed all original as far as I can tell. I bought it 3 weeks ago and haven't had any time to play with it.
Here is the list.
1. Cap (possible, probable condensation)
2. Plug wires ^^^^^^^^^^^
3. Air filter

Check your wires too. From personal experience, years ago I had an '86 Ranger with the 2.3L 4cyl. Truck ran great, unless... I would take it offroading and had a blast doing it (sorry for going off on a tangent). Anyway, I had one waterhole I threw the truck in, and it always ran like crap after for about 3 hours. This went on for months, and I'd check nearly everything. Ultimately, I gave up and took it to the Ford dealer. They ran tests here and there and couldn't find anything. One mechanic finally put 2 and 2 together, actually got 4, and started misting the motor with a spray bottle while it was running. He found plug wire number 2, at the boot on the plug arcing to ground when it was sprayed. These were new wires (put on just before I started dunking the truck), but were parts store generics. Changed the wires and the problem disappeared.
Long story short, get the truck running, and try misting different ignition components to see what acts up when sprayed. May very well be the coil, like Conanski said (and he has been spot on, on several of my problems). I've used the mist bottle several times since to find problems like that.

I knew I was playing with fire when I starter, but I also don't feel comfortable with a vehicle until I make some mod/ improvements.
You can never go wrong with a new cap and wires. What burns me is I just gave away all my spare parts with the musatng I just sold. Brand new wires, new cap, msd ignition, brand new ultima battery. Not all of it would have worked but extra plug wires are always a plus.
This just gives me an excuse to start working on it.
Oil and filter were due any way so a mobil 1 filter and oil will be done while my hands are dirty.
So I go home last night and I tried to start the truck and it will crank and not fire up. I crawled up in to the the engine compartment and pop the cap off. There didn't seem to be any major condensation int the distributor. I located the coil (near the rear of the engine) and popped the coil wire off. I found a substantial amount of corrosion. I wiggled a little bit and nothing. I was running out of time so I tried (in vain) to start it and it was turning slow. I hooked the battery charger this morning an plan to look into it a little more tonight. I am being led to believe its the coil or module because it had some time to air dry yesterday while I was at work.
Check for spark from the coil,could put a plug in the coil wire and see if u have spark. If no spark then id have the coil and module tested. Also make sure the pickup coil under the rotor is dry also
