the teeth on the starter should align with the flywheels teeth how? should there be a slight gap between them? im installing a new one that is suposed to be the convertion equlivalant and when i look though the hole in the bellhousing it looks like there is a little gap as the old starter never left the flywheel but i cant see the alignment/gap spacing with the old starter on because the recoil blocks my veiw.
i have a 292 y block and i dont have an adjustment eaither i just have the stater sitting installed in the bellhousing i just dont wanna turn it over and possibly shred the teeth on something. is there play between the gears or when engaged the teeth should be snug with the flywheel?
mark or paint a few teeth on the ring gear and give it a try. then look at painted teeth. it should be 3/4 as deep as the teeth and all the way across foom front to back. if it sound good , then its most likley good to go. i use a product called persuasion blue to check this but paint should work well also.
well i cant send it back if its used so i have it bolted up with plastic protecting it. i can see staight inside and the teeth on the starter look like they only go in between 1/2 - 3/4 closer to the 1/2 the depth of the teeth it looks like the meatier part of the teeth will make contact i just dont want to round the teth on the starter. is there any way to turn the flywheel by hand with the transmission off
it came out of a 57 tbird and the starter year is unknown but every thing aligns up on the bolts also with the flywheel. does any one know what the correct starters will fit if this ones not right i can return it for the right one .
