The shift **** came off in my hand on my new (used) pickup so I went out with some Locktite brand adhesive to put it on more or less permanately. When I pulled it off I noticed what looked like a screw hole in the end of the shifter stick and looking down inside the **** I noted a small hole also?
Looking at the top of the **** at the embossed six speed shift pattern it appears the top may be an insert that could be pried/popped out? If so does anyone know for certain that the **** is attached by popping the insert out and screwing the **** to the stick?
I don't want to go prying on it to find that by breaking it ...it isn't meant to come out. If it does come out any mechanics know the screw size to use? Is there any harm you can think of if I do use an adhesive?
Clay- lock-tite or Bondo it on and be done with it. As far as I know they are press fit from the factory, no screw. I've seen the shift pattern inserts spin sometimes, but I've never seen one come out- like you I'd hate to mess it up trying to pry it out.
I used JB Wield because that is what I had on hand. And I have watched my insert close enough to know that it rotates 1 rpm per mile on the freeway. Just FYI
I used a rubber mallet to re-install it down on the splines. Pressing it on by hand never seems to work. The rubber mallet trick has held up for 2 years (unless you've tried twisting it on and have stripped the plastic teeth inside the ****)
