I noticed a tapping noise on my 2000 f150.(138,000 mi). After most recent oil change noise seemed to stop, but started up again after a few days. I notice it more during cold starts. Can anyone give me any advice?
i had that problem
i put in seafoam 500 miles before my oil change
after the change it stopped completely
i have the same motor but a 99
but i also went from motorcraft oil to royal purple oil
and the mobile one filter
Well then it could be a spark plug getting ready to blow or an exhaust leak. If it goes up with the engine rpm's it could be an exhaust leak or possibly piston slap if it goes away when it is warmed up.
does that sea foam really work ? how much did you add to the oil?
I've been a boat mechanic for five years I was introduced to seafoam within the first month and seen a lot of other techs use it. I have used it for various problems in the oil and the fuel. It has never worked. Like my dad always said "nothing in a can will fix anything". Maybe it has worked for someone out there but not for me.
on teh sea foam... I have had a bunch of guys I know and respect ( when it comes to motors ) tell me to use it...They sware by it, but me like others I have had no help when using it.
Oh yeah make sure you use the right oil and filters, I know of three guys myself including that using heavy oil cost us motors.
Does it make this noise only at start up then stop after 30 seconds or so? If so then this noise you hear is very common in the 5.4 engine. Normally it is more noticeable in cold weather then stops after 30 seconds or so. I have 160K on mine and its done it since new. Some motors make this sound and some do not. Anyway, in reading the forums I found that running mobile 1 10w-30 synthetic would lessen this sound. I tried it at 30K and have been using it ever since. Synthetic oil sticks to the metal parts better so during start up you get a little better lubrication. Anyway this noise will cause you no problems. My truck still is strong as ever and uses no oil.
If it goes away after the engine warms up, its just piston slap. My '99 will rattle like heck when its cold out, but once the engine warms up the rattle goes away and its just piston slap.
If thats what it is, there is really nothing to worry about.
