My Ex is doing a weird thing. Under moderate acceleration while shifting from second to third it will shift into 3 then jump back to second for a second then back to third. When you start off easy this does not happen. The fluid is normal no smells or partials. Not sure what this could be. Maybe the Throttle Position Sensor going bad?
I have the same problem though I won't say my fluid is without flaw. I did just replace the filter and refill fuild was pretty dark, looks better but does the shift back and forth thing
According to the transgo website there is an issue with 2nd 3rd burnup and I have seen several posts on this.. but I am not a tranny guy so I cant help much... Give their tech support a call. they are pretty knowledgeable and if its a common problem I am sure they will be able to help you out. I did the kit but I was not having any problems prior... so not sure if you need to fix any tranny internals before adding some sort of improvement shift kit. Ford Lincoln Mercury Shift Kits
If you get an answer or info from them or elsewhere, be sure to keep us updated.. I have heard calling BTS or john woods is helpful too..
Well just got the call from the trany shop and they informed me that the trany is losing massive pressure during the shift from 2nd to 3rd. So the trany must be pulled to inspect why. They think in might be a seal or seals that has failed, but being a 04 they are having a hard time believing that. I won't know more until Tuesday.
I got my Ex back from the Trans shop on Monday after I handed over 2076 big ones
It was a mess inside the transmission case, metal shavings everywhere. So bad that the shavings clogged up the radiator but they were able to clear it with the pump. The seals were gone as well as several clutches. So I had to get a total rebuild on a tranny that only had 70K on it - STUPID FORD! (might be the last one I ever buy) They added an extra clutch plate to final drive and built it up as much they could. Oh I also needed a new torque converter so they put a slightly higher stall one in there as well.
You never said which engine and 2 or 4 wheel drive. Would like to know as I have a V10 2wd. I believe there are different transmissions. Also, seems like a good deal if total rebuild as I just paid 2500.00 for a tranny rebuild in a 1995 Lincoln MK VIII. Tom

Sorry, it is a 2004 V10 4wd with a 3.73 rear end. They are the best shop in town and never have been known to rip anyone off.
Thanks for the info. It sounds like you got a good deal. The only thing that might give some concern is the radiator if they did not get all the metal out. Like I said I paid 2500.00 for my lincoln and 2700.00 for a 1992 E350 tranny rebuild which included a build up for towing.
I makes me feel a little better about the ordeal but it still was 2 grand (yuck). They had it on the pump for over 2 hours and made sure it was clean and flake free. They told me if they thought in any way shape or form that it was not clean they would have not done the rebuild as it is under warranty with them and they don't want to "eat" the cost of a new one after I hit the road towing this year.
