'05 4.0 ranger problems

2005 4.0, 2wd stick with 212,000 miles. Cruise set at 75 on interstate and the engine light came on followed by a loss in power, slight rattling of valves and a bad miss. Timing chain? Ideas and suggestions appreciated. Thanks for any help.

Get the code checked. Sounds like rebuild time if it is still missing and rattling.....

ouch

Thanks, i'll check the codes asap. Had a '94 with same set up and got 400,000 out of it with no over haul or oil usage, just couldn't keep a tranny in it. I had my hopes too high for this one apparently. What's the cost of a new motor or rebuild +/-?

Don't the new 4.0's have a timing belt? It might have jumped a cog or two.

The check engine or check gauge light. If check engine defintely run the codes could be anything. Check gauge light could be loss of oil pressure or over heat condition.

Nope. Now I own one, so I can say mean things. The 4.0 OHC used to be the 2.6, 2.8, 2.9 & 4.0 OHV engine. As is the case with "converted" engines, a half-assed cam drive was rigged up.

First, the crank is connected to a blank in the block where the old cam used to live.

In the front of the motor, the cam for the driver side is driven off this.

In the back of the motor, the cam for the passenge side is driven.

If it had a belt on the front, it would be an improvement. A single chain would be good too...

The tensioners for these cams have a history of making noise and going bad. Mostly noise and they'll still run, but as with any cam drive like this, a failure of one or more components would not be a surprise.

Well, not to backpedal on my condemnation of the cam drive set up in the 4.0 OHC, BUT:

--we do not yet know what the failure is in the OP's vehicle

--212,000 miles isn't bad & is beyond the life of many a cam-in-block drive (small block Ford, for example...)

--Ford did fiddle with the tensioner system and beyond noise, I've been told they are ok, and that even the ones in my '98--again, beyond noise which I do not have much of yet at 90,000, they are ok. They ( or at least the front one) was fiddled with under a tsb.

--the cam drive is this way to keep your worries off the 5 speed automatic at least some of the time....

I was looking at Rangers, but the V6/5 speed mt combo seems to not exist in any dealer inventory.

Yeah, the build-it Ford site has the 5 speed stick as standard equipment. But on dealer lots, all I can find are autos.

Thanks for all info. The motor will be examined at end of this week and i'll keep you posted on the results. Judging by sound of valves and vibration of motor it's def. the timing chain. I'm told that jumping more than one tooth can cause valve damage in one or both heads. Worst case i'll need a engine, anyone rebuilt this motor or purchased a refurb?

The cam tensioners were upgraded in 02 to better pieces. You hardly hear of any promblems with the 03 and up 4.0 sohc's.

I can tell you of 2, 1 of which is a car. My truck, which has been very well maintained and driven as a car has 212,000, the car torn down also has 200,000. When my timing chain went so did most valves on one side.

No offense but if this is FMC's idea of an "upgrade" it will be my last ranger.... I came to that conclusion 300 miles from home on the side of an interstate.

My goodness 212000 miles and it broke. I'm sorry it doesn't owe you a thing. We didn't use to get 60,000 out of a timing chain or timing belt. At that kinda mileage Changing the chains and tensioners would be called PM.
What I have seen when they get that kinda of mileage on them most of the failures are catastrophic.

The 4.0 doesn't appear to be an interference engine anyways.
