so i dont know what state you are in, but i dont think that you will ever be able to get the truck to be legal on the road...it would cost more to get it legal then it would to just buy one.

many of the back east states have safty checks not just smog stuff, and if your turn signal isnt working, or you have any trubble code you cant register the car. and the work arounds are getting shut down more and more, this type of thing will only get harder to make legal as time goes on.

Engine, trans, entire wiring harness in and out of the cab, guage cluster, engine mounts, exhaust, rad, various hoses etc. You are pretty much looking at finding a rollover or other smashed pile as a donor truck.
IF it is done right, there will be no truoble codes and no screwing around to make things fit. this is assuming of course, that Ford never chaged the frame between gas and diesel.

5.4 to diesel
Probably easier putting your lift kit on a diesel truck. That is legal, swapping engine types means you cannot move a whole lot of places, used to be illegal in my county. High milage diesels are getting down to $1500, that plus a $4000 to $5000 rebuild, and $1000 on auto tranny, gets you a good truck. Watch for cheapo engine rebuilds, a lot of people put rings and bearings in without boring cylinders cylindrical (they are cone shaped worn) and installing new pistons, or turning the crank, or checking the cam. Turbo needs attention high milage too, $1000. So far, the only engine rebuilders I trust are me, Ford, and Jasper.
