If the fluid is far enough overfilled that the rotating parts churn it up the fluid will foam. That will greatly expand it's volume, and also nearly eliminate it's ability to lubricate. The expanded fluid will come out of the vent on top and sometimes out of the dipstick. That hot fluid can land on the really hot exhaust, and hot oil on hot exhaust can mean a big fire!
