how hard and long does it take to replace an oil pump in a 96 f250 351w?its a auto trans if that makes a difference(more of a story in the 96 f250 forum if interested in reading)in replacing the pan and pump.most likely ill find someone to do it but if its going to be a major hassle and im going to get taxed i might just pass.any info appreciated, thanks ahead.
you can try to raise the motor up as much as you can. you will need to unbolt the pan and then reach up in there and unbolt the oil pump kinda blind if you know what i mean. the pan will not come out with the oil pump still in place. otherwise it requires pulling the motor.
i have an oppurtunity to buy a 96 f250 351,auto,150k for 1500 bucks from a guy i know just dropped 1200 into the motor re-doing the heads up,water pump, etc etc and the oil pump went out 2 weeks ago,he said he was driving and lost oil pressure,it started to knock, pulled over cussed for a few mintues and started it up again and it was fine, drove it 30 minutes home and parked it.he needs a truck so he went out and bought a superduty.now hes got this 96 and they wouldnt take it on trade so he looking to get rid of it.hes saying the guage (oil p)goes up and down and it only knocked that one time like the oil pump is chokeing.he and my good friend pulled the oil filter and said there was only slight metal flakes in there and that he thinks the oil pump needs to be replaced.im looking for a wood and water hauling truck nothing that needs to go on road trips and pull fifth wheels and its got a newer tranny and all those newer engine etc's so im thinking this would be a good buy if the oil pump isnt a major hassle.what would it take to replace the oil pump or could it be something else.its probably ran for an hour since the incident and hasnt went out,but id rather be safe than sorry.any questions, comments and concerned are appreciated.thanks ahead.

OK, no oil pressure, a knock, metal flakes and the desire to be safe over sorry. Hhhmmm.
THAT means this engine needs to be torn down and inspected. How much metal circulated in that engine?
A dead oil pump is just that-dead. It will NOT come back to life and provide satisfactory oil pressure after it goes to zero. Having said that, what IS the problem? Only a tear down will save any good parts left in this engine.
it runs and drives after the knock, but i understand there is going to be some damage done but i looked at it at as if i could put a few hundred in it and then be able to have a good wood and water truck for around the neighborhood id be happy, but the last thing i want to do is just get a nickle and dimer.thanks
