Fuel Problems..ROUND 2

Well, my truck has not been running well and sometimes at all lately. It would drive for awhile and then it would fall on its face, sputter, and eventually stall. I thought that maybe the pickup in the fuel tank was clogged so I pulled the tank and did the "harpoon" mod, removed the screen on the pickup, and added an inline filter before the fuel pump. The truck ran for a little bit and it just did the same thing. The fuel pump is making some awful noise almost "static" like noise. I replaced the fuel pump, and once again ran fine for a little while but did the same thing after a few miles. I went and looked at the pre-pump filter and it was like the element inside collapsed. I thought I had put it in the wrong way but it had the carb end facing the motor. So for giggles I switched it around, and ONCE again ran for a little while but then started the symptoms again. My motor fuel filter is dirty and will get a filter for it soon, but I can't believe a newish fuel filter would just make the truck run like garbage. Also, I have the Water in Fuel light which I'm not sure what that's from. I am getting really frustrated and need some help/insight.

Which screen did you remove? The one on the bottom of the pick up foot, or did you remove the white plastic cartridge in the tube? The white cartridge has 2 small cylinder screens inside. If you left that part alone, it could be your problem.

Anyone ever heard of the screens in the pickup being clogged??? I had to order a fuel filter online because Autozone wanted $27 for a crappy "AZ" filter, but I will let you know what happens when I install it.

The in-tank mixer valve has much finer screen than what you found on the foot. The screen on the foot is just to keep leaves out of the fuel lines. It sounds like your screens are completely clogged up and you would not be the first one to have it happen. This is one of the reasons to do the in-tank Hutch mod.

The arrows are pointing at connections that have to be removed when doing the in-tank mod. The white plastic unit is what contains the screens that get clogged up.

Yes, we've heard of that more than once. Here's what the screens are supposed to look like

Here's what one looks like when it's clogged up

The screen on the bottom of the suction foot is just for large debris. If there's a fuel restriction in the tank, it's usually in the above pictured screens.

I'm not trying to be offensive but did you check your oil? I had a bad oil leak and didn't know the severity until it started cutting off on me and then realized I had almost run it out of oil.

thanks for the pics guys. I'll check the engine oil when I throw the new filter on and if that doesn't fix the problem then i guess the tank will have to come out again

Noisy fuel pump, truck sputters, falls on it's face. Check to make sure the engine oil is good and full, then either drop the tank, or stick a fuel pressure gauge on there where you can monitor fuel pressure while driving.

How clean or dirty was your fuel tank? As you can see, it doesn't take much to plug up those screens.
