Temp rising - failed heater core
83 300 ci....since my core has a leak, I don't turn on the heater, which is OK here in S Texas. I plan to loop one of the heater hoses as a stopgap measure til I get around to replacing the core. The temp gauge has been inching higher. I'm thinking maybe the heater control valve lets a little pressure slip by even when closed, and normally the core side would have equalized pressure, but since my core has a hole, there's a gradual loss of pressure even on the engine side....loss of pressure = rising temperature.

A heater core leak wont cause overheating. I replaced enough of them and never seen it. I had a lebaron once with a plugged core that caused it to overheat. But it had a really weird arrangement for the water flow.

After my heater core failed, I also noticed increasing temps. My remedy was new everything! New heater core, water pump, hoses, thermostat, and clutch fan. The radiator passed a pressure test so I just flushed that out. I even back flushed the motor when the pump was off. Temp is normal again and the heater works great! Total outlay on parts was under $200. Piece of mind that my truck won"t overheat on a deserted hyway in the middle of the night... price less!
