hey all I'm looking to get my first diesel within the next 2 months and I want a ford Idi. it might even be sooner if someone would buy my lovely bronco(hint!). My question is can these trucks run with a newer stock or slightly modded turbodiesel in terms of street performance with the addition of wastegated turbo, pump/injector, head work type mods, etc? are 13s even a posibility? I'm buying one regardless but its something I've been wondering And cant seem to find out. has saves truck seen the track? Sorry if my quest for a quick Idi ford pisses anyone off or if i seem ignorNt or dumb but it seems to sweet to pass up if its possible. Plus I'm 20 and you know how that goes... Anyway thanks for the help! woops I meant daves truck not saves. Sorry I'm on my iPod!
Why do you want a idi? If you want to go fast and spend a lot of money on magazine power upgrades, then you had better get a later model. If you want to upgrade a idi, expect to do a lot of your own research, homemade fabrication, and a long hard road that is not very well beaten to get lots of power out of a idi. You will definitely be different at the drags with a idi though.
the Idi fords are obviously super durable and built strong. From what I understand its a great engine in what I know is a real truck. I figure this is a perfect place to start for anything I wanna do. With 11 & 12 second 12 valves and powerstrokes becoming common I dont see how this Is really an absurd thought. I want a little more go and fun in my truck. but I want a real truck that's why I got out of my dodges and Chevys. it has nothing to do with a magazine its a goal and if talking to you guys on this forum isn't the ideal way to start research.... What is?
If You looking for a go fast rig, stick with a computer controlled diesel. The IDI's work hard, are easily maintained, and long lasting (when properly maintained).
ah but a real truck can play too...all work and no play makes a truck worthless...hell you can(and i have) play around in a semi...so dont be saying these pickups are work only

They are until you try to wring 350 hp out of them. From then on, it becomes a money pit.
I agree trucks should be able to play. I dont see why a truck can't be on any sort of racetrack especially a straight line drag strip. But whatever. Thanks for the article dean that helped. And yeah 350 hp is about what I'd be looking for tops. In getting the feeling no ones tried for that figure yet for any reason but no ones saying its too close to impossible yet so I'm still listening!
Dude
Pretty much the concensus on here is gonna be that making that kind of power with an IDI is a big/huge investment. Its gonna take more money than what you could get out of a newer truck for less money.
But if you want a daily worker that reliable then an IDI is for you. Get a turbo and keep truckin.

My truck will never see a drag strip, but maybe a little stop light fun from time to time. Yeah, the main reason I own it is to work it hard when I need it. But why not have something that is also fun to drive and may suprise more than a few late model trucks when you plant the throttle?
And street/ track performance does translate to work performance when you get down to it.
I am not going to say it can't be done, but I will say internal motor work and about 4500 dollars will be a start at where you want to go.
PS. that 4500 is parts and machine shop work, no labor.
Also you are going to have to fab up some parts yourself, not much aftermarket bolt on power parts out there for the IDI.
What I have a hard time thinking about is why someone wants to use a close to 4 ton vehicle as a dragster.
My truck runs rather well, but I have a bored and built 900 Kawasaki Z1 that does a much better job in the quarter mile.
23 pounds per HP on my truck
2.9 pounds per HP on my bike
It's more impressive to see something that large cover ground that quick.
It's not that hard to make a street bike go fast. But to take something not meant be fast and build it to do that, and be streetable, is a feat. It may not be my cup of tea, but still pretty cool, nonetheless.
Hmm... that's about where I figured your truck to be.
