4x4 option

I just purchased a 99 Lariot with 4 wheel drive. I was suprised the owners manual discouraged against using 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. Can this system be used in the rain? Do I have to use 2 wheel drive when turning corners? As a result of the extra $ charged for 4 wheel drive, I expected a setup similiar to the Expedition or Explorer. Is the rear end dangerous in snow and ice?

You could use it in the rain if you really wanted to but, it's probably best to leave 4wd for snow/ice and off roading. The only rear ends that act funny on ice are ones with lockers which aren't even a factory option.

Don't confuse All-wheel drive with 4-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is designed to be engaged continuously and has a system that senses speed changes (loss of traction) in individual wheels all the time. 4-wheel drive is more of a manual system that trys to put traction equally to both ends at the same time. Using this on dry roads with out at least a little traction slip (rain, snow, etc.) will cause binding at best, and broken driveline parts at worst.
