I am looking at buying a friends 1990 F-150 5.0 pickup. It has 80K miles. It runs very rich (black smoke) and somewhat rough up to about 2200 rpm. Above that, it gets smooth and the power comes on strong. It is getting about 8 or 9 mpg right now, if that. It has a lot of new electrical components on the engine. He used a code reader on it, and it mentioned ECM? The truck is rust free, looks great. Would this be an easy fix? What would the fix be?
Also, it has a badly leaking passenger side valve cover gasket. Is it possible to replace it without taking off the large aluminum intake manifold plenum?
My old 1993 F-150 needs to be replaced. Thanks for any tips. I tried the search function, but only get an advertisement for a Dodge truck! Hal
If the computer isn't throwing any codes the rich condition could be a bad FPR or pinched fuel return line. It's possible the compuer itself is bad too but thats not really common. Otther possible causes include bad sensors but that should show up when the computer is scanned.
There could be several reasons for the black smoke or rich condition. What was the exact code the code reader came up with? ECM stands for engine control module or the engine computer. While it is possible that the ECM is bad, I would think that there was something else wrong other than the ECM, like O2 sensors or the MAP sensor, etc... But if the code reader is coming up with a code indicating a bad ECM, you will probably have to go to the junkyard or auto recycler (which ever you prefer to call it) and try to find one. They should have books to tell you what ECM you can use out of which year truck.
I would guess someone either unplugged the tab solonoids or a wire is broken somewhere. The tab thingys are what controls egr. My truck has been doing sumthing like that loading up when cold but it warms up and is fine. Shortly after i purchased it it was really loading up and it was a bad fpr. gas was being sucked in to the engine threw a vaccum line
