Front axle replacement

I'm getting ready to replace my exploded front dif next week. I bought a used front axle. This is the first time I've done this job and was wondering if any of you with experience with this can chime in. I have a large floor jack but it seems that the lifting pad is a little small for such a large piece. I was experimenting today with the replacement axle and it's hard to lift it without it rolling off the jack. The used axle has the spindle, hub and rotor so I don't have to mess with those. I just have to disconnect the brakes, steering linkage, track bar and associated connections and lower the axle down.

What you could do is jack up the truck so you get the wheels off then lower the ront of the truck onto some jack stands so the truck is just high enough to get the axel lowerd onto the jack, strap the axel onto the jack and then wheel it into place. Just becareful of the coil springs, sometimes that will be the orst part...they store alot of energy. If you have the FE suspened a little most of tht energey should be gone.

Just unbolt the calipers, and hang them buy the caliper dont let them hang by the hose, and then all the suspension stuff you need, and some misc. other parts and you should be good to go. I am not sure what all you need to disconnect but you will seeonce you get started that it shouldnt be that bad to do.

Good Luck and Keep us Posted.

Put something soft/compressive between the jack and the axle, then throw a ratchet strap around it to hold it tight to the jack.

He has an 03.. no coils for him. That said I've never taken the leaf spring off a truck. I guess you just undo the U bolts and let them hang?

The axle just bolts to the leaf spring so it is not a factor.
