If this is a 8.8 rear, are you sure the lock pin bolt head didn't snap off?
Here's a picture of the lock pin. The head sometimes snaps off and the rest of the lock pin still holds the pinion shaft in place.
To get the rest of the pinion lock bolt out you either drill it out or use a torch and cut a groove in the pinion shaft (which requires the pinion shaft be replaced) to get the remains of the pinion bolt out.
If the lock bolt is out, use a punch and knock the pinion shaft inward about one inch. Rotate the axle 180 degrees so you can grab the pinion shaft with some vice grips and pull it out.
Once the pinion shaft is removed, you push inward on the axle and remove a C shaped clip. The axle can then be pulled out. Note where the C clip seats, there is a rubber O ring next to it that you need to transfer to the new axle.
Jack up both rear wheels. Rotate that carrier with the pin in it, till the end opposite the bolt is facing you take a punch and hammer and tap it a bit till it moves about 1/2 inch then roll it around till ya have the other end facing you then stick something like a small punch in the hole and wiggle it and pull it out.
