They now sell the back up cameras integrated with a gps. Same type of camera on lic plate, and screen is the 3.5 in. Even though they are more, if one is looking for a gps also, they seem to be a nice unit.
Have had our camera on since last summer, and make use of it everyday and still luving it.
I happen to know a certain advance auto had 2 open box ones for $70 each the other day
I appreciate it. But I never buy "open" anything or refurbished stuff. There's a reason they have "open box" stuff, and
usually because it hasnt been refurbished yet. Which is of course just as bad or risky as refurbished stuff.
[quote=aortizexcursion;7113974]Here's a thread where Matt M, PA installed a rear view mirror with a built-in monitor like most of Ford's current vehicles offer.
I'd really like to do this to my Excursion, mainly because you don't have to worry about installing a screen somewhere where I think it shouldn't be.
I have seen these in an expedition I test drove. I was excited about it until I saw how small the screen was... like 1in.x1in. I could barely see the trailer hitch. After that test drive I went and bought my excursion!!! I am surprised that Ford would put a camera that dinky on the new trucks when they have a huge gps screen to work with??? </v:shapetype>

The reason why they put a screen in the mirror was so that vehicles without a navigation system could have a rear view camera.
When rear view cameras started to become mainstream they could only be had with vehicles with an expensive navigation system. Using a mirror mounted screen allowed vehicles to have a rear view camera without the pricey navigation system.
Good idea if you ask me; not everybody wants a nav system. I certainly wouldn't get a nav system just to get a rear view camera.
I know the Fords that do have a navigation system utilize the nav screen for the camera instead of the mirror.
Im 30 min away from the snow(Mountans) 30min away from the beach and about 2 hrs. away from glamis. I take advantage of all situations...
My X takes me there.... surfing, sking, riding....
Oh ya river too... Wops teritory.
Sams has the Peak brand just like dunerunner's, but its the 7" screen for $99. Im not sure about the 7" screen though. Be kinda hard to find a spot to mount a screen that large. I says you can mount to your visor or it has a mount that you can mount it somewhere, Whats pretty cool to, it has AV inputs on it so you can hook up a gaming or dvd system to it.
We LOVE our backup camera. It makes hooking up the trailer a snap. We just added a video switcher and aded a camera on the back of the travel trailer. Now when the trailer is attached it sources to the trailer camera so I can see what is behind it. I can switch back and fourth to check on the hitch as well. Anyway, you will love the camera, even in parking lots and parallel parking.

Hi there- can I get some more info about the video switcher? I'm planning on installing a wireless cam in the Ex. After reading your post I'd also like to put a camera in the horse trailer I'm pulling, so I can toggle b/w the two. Any suggestions on the setup? I don't have setting on the wireless receiver so I'm not really sure how it would work with two different cameras to one monitor (which is my wireless receiver too).. Any info is greatly appreciated!

The PAC VA26 is the video switching unit that I have. I just have it hooked to a switch on the dash and when I flip the switch the camera source changes. Very easy to install and cheap. The part is usually around $49.99.
Hope that helps. If you have anymore questions just let me know.
thanks Bryan. After looking at the PAC VA26 , I'll never figure out how to install it Backup plan- I'm thinking of using the VR3 wireless GPS/BU camera (4.5") and mount to the dash for trailer hookup. Then using and additional Sam's Club 7" monitor/camera to watch the horses in the trailer. I'll mount that in the second row seating with some kind of swival or "lots of slack so I can turn it around from back to front" for viewing (I heard it has A/V jacks so maybe I can throw some kind of DVD player there for the kids?). I guess I need to look at the RF interference though and see if it'll affect having two wireless camera-to-monitor configurations and see if that's going to be a problem. argh..
