Were you rolling when you tried to switch it? Not sure, but I think those are normally operated when you are stopped. Does yours have the automatic hubs? I'm also wondering if the hubs not being locked in (if they are manual) or not working (auto) would have anything to do with it as well. Could just be that the shift motor is bad - where did you hear the click, on the transfer case or under the dash? Could also be that the motor is not engaging the mechanical shift mechanism properly or the pushbutton is sticking, too.

EDIT: Also found some other interesting info, wondering if the sensor for the motor is shot. Here is some info on servicing the motor assembly - http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...shiftmotor.htm

- and info on troubleshooting -

It's fairly common for the shift motors on these to get dirty and seized up. They can usually be pulled apart and cleaned up; there are instructions for this in a few places around the internet.

sounds like either the shift motor / assembly is bound up or the motor died, then. Not sure if there is a relay for that motor or not that could be fried.
