MPG pulling trailer last week- info

Just for info, i have a 2001 SCREW 5.4 , 4 x 4. Gets about 17 MPG on the county highway at 58 mph everyday. Last week i took a trip from Illinois to Texas. Pulled a 6 x 12, 2 axle inclosed , 2000 pound trailer with 2000 pound load down. Got 11 MPG at 70 MPH constant highway speed, trailer loaded. ran mostly in OD, kicked down a few times in the hills. On the way back, the trailer was empty. Got right at 12.5 mpg, again at 70 mph. Last two hours on country highway at 60 MPH it seem to go up, maybe 13.5 mpg.

Sounds about right, my old 01 would get about 9 or 10 pulling about 7000lbs.

Steve, do you run a stock air filter? I have the same truck and got about 17 highway stock.... No joke a CAI kit got me to 19! I am still pretty brutal in town, but I was very happy with increase in highway miles.

On my Explorer I just replaced my stock filter with a K&N and got about 1.5 better on the highway also.....

i have the stock air fliter and box, but i have modified the inlet tube to the fender well. it is very small in diameter, maybe 2 inches, and i increased it to 3 inch PVC tube to the fenderwell. My feeling is the stock air filter is gobs big for 2000 RPM speed. If i was running it at much higher speeds the filter may be a limiting factor. I did not get any different milage with the tube change, but has a slightly "throaty" sound now.
