I have a 76 highboy (kinda rough). I do some coyote hunting which involves hauling *** across country fields and my transfer case would pop out of 4 wheel drive in reverse all the time and in drive when I would hit a decent sized bump. Now it won't engage in either 2H or 4H. All I have is 4L. I'm a race car driver not a 4 wheel drive man.(9sec. 1/4mile 66 fairlane) I'm trying to teach myself how to work on these. It is a NP203 case. I put a new chain in it and changed a couple other worn parts from another one i had and it didn't change anything. Any help would be nice. Thanks
Sounds like you have some problems with the linkage itself. Has this case been left stock or has it been converted to part time?
You should probably start by inspecting the linkage assembly and the shifter.
Then you should verify that the sift shafts themselves are functional. There is a bushing inside that can make range selection a problem.
I ask about the conversion because a 203 case (stock) does not have 2wd.
It has the conversion kit in it so 2 wheel is on it (lockouts on truck). I was wondering if the linkage could be it so I will check that tomorrow. I started to check that today. I pulled the boot off in the cab and the lever hits on the opening on the floor when I pull back to 2wd. I will mess with it and see what I can come up with. Thanks
Alright, that is the next thing to check. Sometimes the linkage can get worn, and perhaps the cab is touching the linkage preventing it from actually fully engaging a certain selection.
You have two linkages and only one lever.
One linkage selects the "range" box, which is simply high range and low range, and the other engages the front output.
Modify the shifter or make a set of levers that will shift the linkages independantly, and you may never have this problem again. This will also alow you to use 2wd low range with the hubs locked by the way. If this is not important, then just fix your linkages and you should be shifting just fine again.
You can also verify or isolate your problem by disconnecting the linkages, and selecting the desired range or output to see if it pops out.
Good Luck.
thanks for the advice. I unhooked the linkage on the transfer case and put it in 4h and made a temporary bracket to hold it in. I then went out of town and got after it a little in both forward and reverse and everything seemed to work. My next step will be to build a completely new linkage because mine is about as wore out as it can get. again THANKS a lot Darin 1997 ford F250 Powerstroke, 1976 ford F250 highboy, and my favorite toy 1966 ford fairlane GTA w/514 drag car
