In about 5 months I'm going to put a set of headers on my truck. My first question is, Do the make any additional noise? If so how much? If anybody has any advice or comments about this, I'm all ears.
It depends on the header. If the header is properly sealed and is heavy guage steel with good quality pipes running to the rear, you'll be louder that stock, but not too bad.
The thickness and size of the pipe, the length and thickness of the mufflers make a BIG difference! You could set two trucks with headers side by side and have a HUGE difference just because of the size of the pipe and type of muffler. With a truck, you can / should go with long headers and small pipes, and you can go with the large mufflers.
Will these be going on your current truck? If so, I bought a set of summit shorty's for about $170 and the only problem I have had out of them, is that I bought the allen head bolts that are supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. And they are now leaking because of those stupid bolts. These are really good headers. Other than the bolts they have given me no problems whatsoever! I recommend them. But there is no noise, unless you blow out a gasket.
I am going to have to switch back to the original bolts really soon.
My goal with exhaust is to be a quiet as possible. I plan on headers and a cat back system but I want to stay quiet. Nothing worse then being smoked by a truck you can't even hear while your little honda farts away.
I put that set of shorty headers, a high flow cat, and a custom built Flowmaster system on mine. And mine sounds just as good as some of the 87-93 mustangs ruinning around with flowmaster systems on them.
Mine is a two chamber, single inlet, dual outlet muffler. Of course, mine also has the echo tips on it too. They are 24" long, and 3.5" in diameter. This setup I have sounds really good. Especially if someone is parked next to me in a parking lot, with an extremely sensitive alarm system on their car or truck! Sets them off almost every time! Chirp Chirp!
But it's not so loud that you can't hear yourself think or talk inside the truck. In fact inside with the windows up it's reasonably quiet.
