you said what I was trying to get across. I would expect the fees at grocers or check cashing places, but not the bank.
It is new and something I need to adjust to. I do not deal with the banks much, so it was unexpected. The five dollar fee for the amount of the check was minimal. What if someone has nothing and gets a check for ten bucks?

I'm okay with a service charge at a bank (and a holding period before money is dispersed) if neither the writer of the check, nor I, have an account there. They wouldn't be obligated to either of us, and in that case, I would think it would be fair to pay a fee like that.
But, in no way, shape, or form, do I think it is okay for the bank that the check is drawn from to charge the recipient a fee to collect their monies owed to them.
