I just recently heard of the "catback" system because I was getting price quotes on a dual exhaust system for my 93 F150. I was told by a guy (he said he had 43 years experience in exhaust systems) at a performance shop that the catback system has better performance than a true dual system and the Federal law prohibited modifing a vehicle with one cat to a 2 cat system.
Questions:
1.) How can you possibility have better performance with only going dual after the muffler?
2.) Has anyone heard of this Federal law?
I proceeded with the true dual system with an 2.5" pipe (including h-pipe),carsound cats and magnaflow mufflers straight out the back. It runs very nice...now on the the intake and chip.
The reason you are able to get performance by going dual after the muffler is back pressure which increases torque. You have to have the right size(s) of pipe and the right muffler(s) to achieve maximum flow without losing to much back pressure. I know this because the Thunderbird SC has this type of exhaust setup and has great HP and Tremendouse torque, especialy with an after market exhaust. This does quiet the exhaust thow and for a truck I preffer a loud ##### true dual with a H or a X pipe.
1.} A Dual exhaust system is going to flow better.
2.) He is correct about the federal law. About ten years ago the EPA stepped in so now it is illegal to remove your cat unless it is defective. Sounds like he is trying to sell you something since he cant legally dual out your truck.
Did you do the right thing? I would only worry if your state has vehicle inspections.
