Nice sounding exhaust?

It almost time to replace the muffler in my 95 f-150 with 5.0. I will only be replacing the muffler since the stock pipe is still in really good condition. Everything else is stock. I was wondering what suggestions people had. I just want one that sounds nice. The auto parts stores around here are Advance Auto, NAPA, Car Quest and Parts Plus.

Depends on what you like, if you like a lot of snap, crackle, and pop, throw a cherry bomb or a piece of straight pipe on there. If you like a low rumbly sound (at least as much as you can get with a 5.0) try a Flowmaster 40 series or a Magnaflow, but personally I think Magnaflows make your truck sound like a boat.....Its all just a matter of opinion.

If you've still got both of the stock cats in place the truck is gonna be quiet no matter what you do to it. I don't really know why Ford used such a huge muffler on these trucks, because you can hardly hear the exhaust without the muffler anyways. The cats on these trucks really quiet them down.

I pulled the muffler of my 96 F150, with a 302, and it was surprisingly quiet. It had a little rap to it when revved but other then that it didn't make much noise.

If your looking to do this without spending a bunch of cash my advice would be to cut the muffler out and stick a piece of straight pipe in to replace it. If you don't like the way that sounds then try some different mufflers on it.

I've gone through at least 25 different exhaust configurations on my 96 F150 over the years. I tried various turbo mufflers, glasspacks, an original 40 series Flowmaster. It didn't matter what type of muffler I put on it, the truck didn't get very loud until I got rid of the stock cats.

I second jimbo beams remarks on them not getting very loud with the cats. I have a "high-flow" cat and mine still does not get the volume I want. It has headers, a custom y-pipe, the "high-flow" cat, and 3" pipe from the cat back with a Flo-Pro V7. It is nice a deep sounding, but still not very loud.

The next thing I am doing is pulling the cat out, I do not have emissions testing where I live so I don't need it anyway. If you want the truck to be a much louder you have two options. If you do not have emissions, pull the cat and put on the muffler you want, I think chambered mufflers sound best. Or you can ditch the muffler completely and keep the cat. Ditching the cat and putting in a good muffler will be loudest.

Do you have an oxygen sensor behind your cats? If the answer is no, you will not have any drivability problems after kicking the cats to the curb!

well, my 95 2wd has all the factory parts, and it's.... a snore.

My 89 s10 with a 4.3 has a single 2.5 pipe with a Thrush Welded muffler and no cat, it has a nice little rumble to it.

My 92 with a 351W has true duals 2.5, no cats, and Flowmasters, it makes everyone turn and look when I romp on it.

My old man's 91 with a 460 has no cat, 3 inch pipe, and a GIANT bus muffler, sounds a lot like the s10, but louder one level...

I'd say lose the cat if you can (legality plays into that) and only if it's bad, and put a welded muffler on, they last longer and sound more mellow...

My O2 sensor is on the exhaust manifold and getting it inspected is not a problem. I just want to leave as much as the original stuff as possible. Aftermarket stuff never lasts. It doesnt have to be loud or obnoxious, i just want to be able to hear it.

the o2 sensor is not on the exhaust manifold (i dont know why that popped into my head) its infront of the cats but behind the crossover pipe. If i cut the cats off there, that steel is really think and looks to be oval shaped. I'm afraid of it leaking there. I dont want to mess around too much, i just want to hear my truck (sorry for repeating that so much). I also dont want to have to replace exhaust components every year either. Even if the sound is mellow, i would be happy.

My setup sounds real good with the cat, I just want it to be more aggresive. You should be happy with the cat in there, since you are not looking for it to real loud.

Yeah, i think i will go that route first, since i only need to replace the muffler, everything is still in really good shape for being 14 years old.

Personal preference...I have run Flowmasters (and they do sound really good on a Ford V8) on my Mustang forever (just switched the system 2 years ago from 3 chambers to 2 chambers and slightly bigger pipe when I added different heads, headers, etc.). Kept the original Flowmasters cause they were still in really good shape (at over 15 yrs old!) and may consider running them on my F150 if I decide to mess with the exhaust on it. The construction on them is heavy walled, fully welded and they are very, very durable. To be honest though (maybe I am getting old), with my Mustang as loud as it is (which I love..I rarely turn the radio on cause the exhaust sounds so good) it is kinda nice to drive a nice, quiet vehicle too so I am in no rush to change the exhaust on the truck unless I go with long tube headers, etc.
