Maintenance

So on previous threads i have had questions and comments on many randomus (yes i made up a word) topics.

So now Id just like to ask for yalls opinion on a couple of things.

First off I drive a 2003 f150 xl 4.2 2x4 w/ 100100 ml.

I believe i have the vacuum leak nightmare that i will be attending to this weekend. So as im tackling that problem I plan on just doing some general maintenance, like plugs, wires, cop, and trans flush with new gasket and fluids. Any suggestions on brands that yall use?

I have replaced the mas, and upper o2s since Ive had the trouble codes pop up. The codes are still popping up. (VERY PISSED!)

Thats all, just like to hear yalls thoughts.

Thnx,
matt

Wow, this is too wierd! This weekend I am doing maintenance on my 2003 F150 2X4, 4.2, with 101473 miles also. I bought it new and have done oil changes and tire rotations every 5000 miles.

I just replaced the front wheel bearings with new Timkin brand and had the front rotors turned since I was getting some pulsation from them on braking. I had done the front brakes at 60000 miles and had the rotors turned then also. There was enough "meat" on the rotors for a second turning, and they came out fine. I had repacked the front bearings at 50000 miles, and figured a new set wouldn't hurt.

Now for the 100000 miles I am replacing the plugs and wires, the serpentine belt, and the fuel filter. All are Motorcraft brand I have bought on line. I had replaced just the plugs at 50000 miles even though the book said they were good for 100000.

Yesterday I stopped at the local Ford dealer and got two gallons of the Gold Motorcraft antifreeze and flushed and replaced the old stuff. Over the next several days I will be checking and adjusting the antifreeze to get the proper mix.

Since ours dosen't have COPs, I deceided not to replace the one piece coil at this time since the truck runs fine. I'll wait and see how it handles the new plugs and wires.

Good luck with your maintenance!

I bought mine new also. I thought i have been taking good care of my truck with regular maint, every 3000 miles, but with this rough idle and start up Im not too sure I am doing everything needed.

What are you averaging on gas? I get 15 city 18 hwy.

What are your codes? If we know, there could be a solution to your problem.

I keep reading a lot about plugs in here and I would recomment that you go with straight factory replacements. I think it would be in your best interest to keep them as close to stock as possible. My opinion only. Good luck with you little adventure. It must be truck work weekend as I have a bunch to do on both of mine this weekend. So who is bringing the BEER!! LOL!!!

Overall I average 17 mpg since day one with this truck. I don't do any towing or heavy hauling with it, but do run 70-75 on the highways.

It has been a very trouble free truck. In fact, I had the 72 Month 100000 Mile Extended Warranty and this is the first vehicle I have not had more repairs over the life of it than what the warranty cost!

The only non Motorcraft part I have put on this truck so far are the front bearings, unless Timkin supplied Ford with the originals.

100,000 miles and going strong

I need your help. I have scanned the forums and have come up with what I think I need to do for the 100,000 mile maintenance. I have a 03 SCab 5.4, 4x4, dual exh, K&N, Hypertech. I don't have any problems with it and it runs good.

definitely change plugs (Motorcraft?)
Belt?
Coils?
Wires?

Brakes are good so's brake fluid (just flushed)
Antifreeze just changed (yellow)
Tranny filter changed and flushed at 60,000
Dif's fluid have been changed 20-30,000 ago depending on front or rear.
Front hub bearings have slight humm but all other joints are tight.
Battery changed 2 years ago

Anything else?

Also i'm still using the 5w-20w originally recommended oil and only loosing about 1/2 qt ever 3000 mi. Should I increase the viscosity? To what and what brand would you recommend?

As always your expertise is greatly appreciated.

Builder 123, I follow the "Normal Schedule" in the Maintenance Guice which came with my truck when I bought it new. If you don't have that book, I think there may be an electronic version of it on the Ford web site.

I will list the items which should be done at 90K and 100K.

Change Oil and Filter 90K and 100K

90K
Inspect wheel ends for play and noise, cooling system and hoses, exhaust system and heat shields, steering linkage, suspension, driveshaft, and ball joints, tires for wear and rotate, replace air filter, replace fuel filter, replace cabin air filter

Change transmission fluid/transaxle fluid on all with AX4s, 4F50N, 4R100, 4F27E (this is called for every 30000 miles under normal schedule)

100K
Inspect drive belts(s), inspect and rotate tires, replace spark plugs, change yellow coolant, Replace PCV valve.

Green coolant should have been replaced at 45K, 75K, and then at 105K

Hope this helps.

One side note, I follow the maintenance schedule as close as I can. I have the 4R70W transmission which does not call for a fluid change until 150000 miles in the book. I have had no problems but am thinking about changing it now at 100K. I hear pros and cons about changing it now, but will take a chance on doing it I think.
