my 86 blew the u joints and after going to Autozone they told me it takes 2 diffrent size joints a DG 4800 and a DG 4900 8 being the front and 9 being the rear.. the rear joint went in fine and sits secure in the pinion yoke, hoever the front one presses into the tranny yoke fine, but the bearing caps are too small where they press into the driveshaft itself. They swear up and down that its the right bearing cap but if it doesnt press in, then its not.

Autozone is full of it!
The 1980/89 Ford truck parts catalog lists THREE different front U-Joints for a 1986 F150.
It depends on the wheelbase, 2WD or 4WD, engine size and transmission type.
Then there's this factor to consider. At some point someone may have changed the driveshaft.
I knew they were full of $#%& when they said it was the right bearing cap.. the sahft on my truck has a what looks like a counterbalace on the tailshaft end yoke if thats any help as to if its a stock shaft of replacement, but no one carries any other u joints than the 48 and 49 or w/e they have it part #'ed at their store.
only problem is I got the first set from O'Reilys and they were wrong too, Advance has to order them and im banking on Napa to have the right ones... Either way I'll be bringing my shaft ( in pieces ) into the stores to make them look even stupider when they cant match a u joint to the shaft lol

How about giving me the application?
1986 F150 302: What is the wheelbase? Is it 2WD or 4WD? What transmission?
I can give you the Ford part numbers, and most likely the Spicer part numbers.
Either numbers can be crossed over by autoparts stores to the brands they sell.
I can also give you the bearing cap and other U-Joint specs.

It's most likely, 117" as that is the short wheelbase, but to be sure you could measure from center hub on the front, to center hub on the back, and that will give you your wheelbase measurement. Just convert the feet into inches.
