I am interested in getting a new truck. I own a 1989 Ford F-150 with the 5.0l. I know that ford no longer puts this engine in the trucks. So, I considered a 4.6l. can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two? I realize that the new one is a overhead cam, but what else? Which engine is the better one.(4.6vs5.4) I am thinking about a RegularCab-Long-bed fourwheeldrive.

James, I don't know anything about the older truck you own. About the two newer V8's: there's an artical here on Romeo vs Windsor that tells some of the differences just in the two 4.6 engines. I've the 4.6 Windsor(97 XLT Supercab 4X4) that I've really enjoyed. Only very minor problems that were very easly and cheaply fixed. It gives me excelent gas milage (for a huge truck of course)! And can tow my 6x10 trailer w/my husbands harley w/no problems. The 5.4 doesn't get as good a milage but if you need better towing abilities then it's the one to go with.

What are you going to use your truck for? If this is just a daily commuter or lightly loaded, Then the 4.6 may be all you need. If you plan on using this as a real truck then the 5.4 should be what you are looking at. I drove both before ordering my new 99' extended cab 4X4 and you can tell the difference when you ask the truck to pull hard. I get between 14 and 15 mpg driving the 26 miles to work on back roads and city streets. I just got back from a 600 mile trip, lightly loaded, doing an average of 70 mph on the interstate and got 17.24 mpg. I plan on pulling a camper trailer eventually (plus I just like the feeling of all that power) which is why I ordered the 5.4. Drive them both and see which feels best to you. Check the EPA mileage figures on the sticker. I don't think they differ that much between the two engines. Happy shopping!
