Ford Tri-Motor Aircraft, originally built by the Stout Aircraft Company. Known around the world at one time as the TIN GOOSE because of its corrogated metal skin.
Henry Ford bought the company circa 1926, but ended production after Henry's chief test pilot was killed in an accident sometime in the early 1930's.
When the pilot, who was a favorite of Ford's was killed, Henry abruptly shut down production.
By this time, the Ford Tri-Motor was considered obsolete by many in the aircraft biz, even tho both Fokker and Junker (German-pronounced Yunker) built similar planes for years afterwards.
You know of course, that back then, Stewards/Stewardesses had to be trained nurses.
Yeah, I know, how old is this guy ???
Another interesting point is that the Tri-motor and it's design were recently studied for design help in developing a state of the art fuel effecient STOL aircraft.
I'm not familiar with the death or cause concerning Hehry Ford's pilot friend but I do know that the Tri-motor had a good overall safety record. The plane wqs extremely slow and it was most likely the DC-3 had a lot more to do with the demise of the tri-motor. CLICK HERE for the rest of the story, but it doesn't say a thing about the wire they used in it or where to get more of it.
Later Folks...
In the 1970's, Tri-Motors were still being flown in Central and South America, and I believe one US company was flying them commercially in the Great Lakes region.
The Tri-Motors, to put it mildly, had loud cabins. Ear plugs were mandatory.
Maddux Inc., the CA Lincoln Distributor, was also in the aircraft biz.
Maddux not only flew Tri-Motors, but the company he started, Transcontinental Air Transport, later merged with Western Air Express to form Transcontinental & Western Air = TWA.
When Howard Hughes bought the company, he changed the name to Trans World Airlines.
Don't get me started on ocean liners, lakers, or RR's...or you'll get more of this worthless trivia!
Later Folks...
I'll bet ya a DOLLAR that within 48 hours someone posts this thread:
"Hi,
