Got a 99 xlt and when you pop the truck in reverse the parking brake shoes hang up on the inside of the drum. Took the rotor off today when i got home and took a look at the shoes to see if maybe the lining came off but i noticed that the rear shoe was just hanging and it really wasnt attached to anything. So what i need to know is if there is a spring to hold the two shoes together on top like a regular drum brake set up? And if anyone has pictures or drawings of the parking brake set up, that would help out because alot of crap fell out and i dont know if anything else is missing. Thanks, John
I just replaced both parking brakes on my 00 Expy; part #3 in the diagram above is the hold down spring, it clips over a pin that is pushed into the backside of the backing plate through a small hole and then through the hole in the brakeshoe, the clip goes over the tip of the pin. I'll be your pins/clips rusted and came apart. Also, check the brake actuation lever mechanism at the top of the brake assembly, part of it is inside the backing plate and holds the shoes together at the top along with part #2 above. The lever also exits out the back of the backing plate toward the inside of the wheel, you will see the brake cable attached to it. My cable was broken and so was it's tensioning spring on the end of the cable. All of this stuff can really corrode over time. I got a complete brake shoe and hardware kit from Autozone and overhauled all of it in an afternoon, including replacing the cable. Make sure you clean it all thoroughly with brake cleaner and then add white lithium grease on parts that wear against the backing plate, such as the shoes. That should help.
