Total Instrument Failure

Last night all instruments quit working at once on my 97 F-150 - speed, tach, fuel, volts, temp, odo, trip odo, oil. I have checked all other equipment and can find nothing else that is not working, just my instruments. I have checked the 50 A fuses (20 and 21) under the hood and also the 5 A fuse (2) under the dashboard, all are ok.

I have been searching this site for a couple of hours and am starting to go cross-eyed. I think I saw a thread somewhere that stated that this was probably a GEM problem, but I cannot find that thread again.

Any ideas?

I only have a 96 manual, so I am not sure this is correct, but have you checked fuse #18, 15 amp in the underdash fuse panel?

I did not, but since 18 is listed as Instrument Illumination and my instrument panel is lit up, I believe that fuse is ok. I will check later today, but I doubt that that is my problem.

My diagram doesn't show that as illumination. It shows it powering the voltmeter, and all the other gauges. If my diagram is wrong, hopefully yours has the same function fuse, but in a different place. I also have a 99 diagram, so I will look at that one too.

The 99 is different. All the gauges are microprocessor controlled.

Fuse 18 was good. I did lose my dash lights when this fuse was pulled.

Still scratching.
