In searching previous posts, I found a thread where MikeYates had the same problem. PawPaw made a suggestion that I thought sounded good (see below)... it involves letting the engine suck some Seafoam in thru a vacuum port upstream from the intake manifold. I bought some Seafoam (and a little needle)... Now I just need to identify the right place to feed it in. Can anyone provide a picture and point out the "vacuum port" near the throttle body? My son would be eternally grateful... he is itching to start driving his "new" ride, but we really want to address this first.

Maybe use something like a <A href="https://www.ford-trucks.com/rx98192zju/kwldirect.php?kwid=658" target=_blank rel=nofollow>metal </A itxtvisited="1">sports inflation needle, ( the kind used to inflate basket & foot *****, that has the small holes in the end of the needle), attached to a length of tubing, one end at a vacuum port upstream from the problem area, say, around the throttle body, then dip the needle into the Seafoam, to let the engine get a good 'sniff", but not long enough to stall, or hydrolock the engine."
Toward the back of the motor, look for a small vacuum solenoid just under the intake manifold but above the starter. Ensure that the vacuum lines are secure and not rotted or burned through. The bottom vacuum line apparantly is prone to failure.
Thank you for your reply Rockledge. One of my challenges is I don't know what certain things look like. I have a Haynes manual, but it doesn't seem to show vacuum ports. Does this forum allow pics to be posted? For example, I googled "Ford Vacuum solenoid" after I read your post... does it look like this?:
I haven't seen pics used on this forum to the extent that I have on some others, but I have found that it can turn a forum into a mecca for sharing knowledge. I, myself, being mechanically challenged rebuilt the engine on an old motorcycle with the help of folks at SOHC Forums. I mention all of this info because once we start showing each other pictures to illustrate our questions and answers, things get REAL interesting. I hope this info is useful to someone. I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly, never seen the IMRC on a 2.3L myself. But the best thing to do in any case would be to check every single vacuum hose and connection that you can find back there.
I know this is an old post, but i had some issues on my 01 2.3 ranger with the imrc. i found a youtube video of a guy showing where and describing where it is.
