Hey everyone i am getting ready for a upcoming truck pull in a couple months. I just put a brand new Windsor in my F-250 and am looking for a little more power. I have 33x13 super swampers on it and am looking to turn these puppies over. I figured i should pry break the motor in so i put 12,000 miles on it before i would touch the engine. If anyone could give me any tips, ideas on how to get more power through my top end...above the heads but i still want to slide a cam in there. By the way its fuel injected fyi.
My suggestion for pulling is to take the swampers off and put a normal set of tires on. Those swampers are too much tire for pulling. Big meaty tires+ truck pulling= broken parts. Oh and make sure you use 4 low, you'll never do anything in 4 hi. Just my two cents.
33s are only a little more than an inch taller than stock, you should be fine. 4 hi is good for the snow and light mud. Use 4-low for really deep snow (I use 4-hi for 2 foot deep snow and it is fine) and fat mud holes. Use 4-low for the truck pull. If you want you could consider lower gears (higher numerical ratio) like 4.56s, which would help you in a truck pull.
If you don't want to do a cam right away, 1.7 roller rockers will give you some more lift. Before getting a cam, you will need to know if you have speed density or mass air, the speed density system does not adapt enough for a lot of the big cams.
I was refering to the tread design of the swamper, it is too agressive for pulling. The key to truck pulling is tire speed, and with an agressive tire like a swamper it takes alot of hp and a strong driveline to be able to turn the tires and keep everything together. That is why a standard radial truck tire works the best, like an all terrain or something of the sort.
ok man i know how to pull i do both styles of pulling, i sled pull and i do tug a truck. The swampers work fine on both and extremly well with tug a truck thats why i run them. I have a mass flow sensor and its a stock engine its not a crate racing engine. Its a bone stock motor strait from Ford. Im leaning twards putting a cam in it with a chip and a cold air intake. Any suggestions on this?
No need for a chip then, just advance base timing at the distributor. The Comp XE264HR-12 is a large upgrade from stock and will deliver quite a bit more power as long as the exhaust isn't all stock too.
