No PATS on a 97 but quite a project for sure. The best way is to find a donor vehicle so you have everything. Keep in mind you will need the transmission also.
12 YO F150 4X4's w/4.6 are pretty common. That's a lot of work to come out on square one. IMO engine swaps only make sense when you achieve something impossible to get from FORD that's also really sweet. Fewer swaps make practical sense. There was no payback in the recent topic about putting a GM 350 in an F150.
Anybody heard of a 4 cylinder diesel F150? Rumor of a Yanmar swap getting 35 MPG! The way I heard it the motor came out of a boat.
Unless you have a donor vehicle and lots of mechanical experience, and BOTH vehicles were stupidly cheap to buy, I'd pass. 4WD means a more expensive transmission unless you get a complete cheap donor.
