Anyone able to help with this? New bed for my '40 project (MackProducts) ... no instructions, no old bed for reference. The picture shows the front bed panel with the 1/2" vertical lip shown in position on the outside of the bed side panel. My question is, on an original bed, does this lip fit on the inside surface of the bed side panel or the outside surface? Yes, I've spoken with a company rep. but let's just say the communication was a little less than 'clear.' My early '50 F1 isn't much help with this either ... it has an aftermarket bed too (Mar-K). If it fits inside, I'm off and runnin. If it's outside, I presume the lip also fits over the front stake pocket lip which would first be attached to the side panel. (?) I'd appreciate any advice available. (Thought I'd try this forum first .. will try the older trucks also).
Ken, On my original 49 bed (steel floor like a 40) the flange is on the inside of the bed. Incidentally, I replaced the steel floor as well as the wood under the steel floor. It is not a trivial task. I have 2 spot welders. I talked to Mack Hills himself before I attempted the floor.
Thanks Bill. That's what I was afraid of ... the panel just doesn't seem to fit best that way. But, I got the bed as part of a project the last owner needed to get out of. I think he may have pre fit things slightly wrong. Anyway, I sure appreciate you looking.
Ken, Assuming that you are putting a new stock steel floor in your 40 bed, when you get to that point I can share with you my lessons learned on the installation.
Ken, Smart move going with the oak floor. I put the steel floor in but would recommend that others go the oak floor route. I did replace my original rear sill but have not done other bed work. I was fortunate, my bed was/is in great shape. I replaced the steel floor because it was so badly dented but not rusted. I can't totally blame po's since I used it as a work truck hauling engines, Jag IFS and other lumps of steel for a number of years before starting the current build.
Bill, I put oak in my F1, finished it natural with marine spar varnish, and it turned out great. Like you, I replaced my original F1 bed when I was doing that build because between the dents and rust out, it was just more than I was confident to tackle at that time. I remember though, that it was basically the same structure as the one I'm putting together for the '40. Different dimensions I think, but same parts. Wish I had it now for reference.
