Ok fellas, here's one for ya exhaust specialists...I got a 1986 F-250HD 4x4. Got headers, Edelbrock Performer intake, Edelbrock 600 4bbl carb, and as of right now, flowmaster 30 series: one muffler, dual in/dual out. I wanna know if I can remove that and put on a stock Ford Muffler (single in/single out) I took off my 99 F-150 and use a Y shaped collection pipe at the front and back of the muffler to hook up to the two exaust pipes running from the headers and the two that run out the side to the chrome tips that are on there right now and use the regular stock Ford muffler which is single in/single out. Reason being right now it is entirely too loud, the Flowmaster...I mean you can here me coming a mile away, and as nice as that is sometimes, I'd like to seriously cut down some (not all) of that sound without spending too much, and the muffler I took off the 99 F-150 is basically brand new, used for about 3 weks, so it's in great condition, like new. Would all I need is some 2.5" C-clamps, the 2 into 1 collection pipes for front and back, and a few short pieces to connect it all together? Preferably like to do this so if I wanted to, I could take 20 minutes and hook the flowmaster right back on.
why wouldn't you do it? Basically my problem is it is wayyy too loud, and I want to swap on a pair of mufflers that will seriously dampen sound, so when I'm drivin with my girl I can actually hear her talkin to me, rather than jus noddin my head! I don't wanna spend the money on the dynomax, cause I know for fact that Flowmaster is the best brand for nice tone. I had Cherry bomb Vortecs on my F-150, and those were alright but not all that great. My buddy had dynomax on his explorer, and those were pretty good sounding, but for some reason only last two years or so before rusting out all together. My Flowmasters now are great sound, just way too loud for me. So I could put Flowmaster 50 series on which is alot quieter. But I figured since I had the muffler already, I could swap the old stock one from the F-150. But now I actually think I'm gonna buy two smaller single in/single out mufflers, they're about $20 each, and put one on each pipe leading back, set them vertically, Oval going the long way, to fit them side by side...that should really reduce my sound output, I hoe, and it will be cheap enough, and I won't have to cut much. I want to do it with just clamps so I could always swap the flowmaster on if I wanted to cause some trouble!
The Superturbos and the $20 mufflers you're looking at don't last because they are made of thin aluminized steel. Heat and moisture eat them up quick. The stock F150 muffler is very restrictive. If $$ is an issue then go with the $20 mufflers.
