Flowmaster Mufflers

I am looking into putting a Flowmaster Muffler on my '88 full-size Bronco (351-V8) and am looking for some advice.
1). Which Flowmaster Muffler would work best (I am leaning toward the 30 or 50 series, 40 is a little loud for my taste)

2). Should I replace the entire exhaust system while changing the muffler? It looks like all of the exhaust is original, everything seems to be rust/corrosion free except for the tail pipe which has several large rust holes.

3). How much should I expect to pay for these parts?

Thanks for the help.

The best bang for your buck will be a 3 chamber Flowmaster 50 series.
Exhaust systems rarely rot out ahead of the converter. It is so hot it boils out the condensation within.
Shop around for price. Heard that summit.com has the best prices.

Good luck!

I just had a set of dual exhaust put on my EFI302-powered '90 Bronco this past June. I used dual "cats",and a set of Flowmaster Series 50 mufflers.I went with 2 1/4" diameter from the manifolds all the way back.Total cost was $600.The 50-series mufflers give a nice exhaust note. Without going with the Flowmasters, the cost would've been about $450. Running dual convertors actually quiets the exhaust note,so if you want power&SOUND-get Flowmasters.

LAST EDITED ON 25-Sep-01 AT 09:08 AM (EST)[p]Don't go 30 series! 30 is louder than 50 or 40...30 series is what I have on my 1986 F-250 HD 4x4 with Edelbrock intake, carb and air cleaner, 351W; it's a single chamber dual in dual out muffler that is typically used for prostreet/dragstrip where noise level is a concern. 30's are used to quiet the sound of strip cars, even though the sound is still super loud. If you want ***** to the walls loud, go 30 series single chamber, if you want nice mellow tone that's not overly loud, go 50 series triple chamber. I know at flowmastermufflers.com it gives an outline of the mufflers, what's quieter and louder, int/ext sound, etc, but I have heard the 30 (my truck) the 40 (my buddies camaro) and the 50 (my dads 67 nova). Out of them all, my truck is loudest by far, maybe it's cause of the engine set up, but mine's def. loudest. My dad's Nova sounds the best though, sweet sweet powerful very full tone. Don't like the 40 on the camaro, just to raspy I think is the best way to describe it. 70 series is quiet, but a nice mellow tone, just not very loud, not aggresive. 80 series is loudest, you'll find it on T/A's, GN's, Camaros, mostly muscle cars, but it could probably be configure to a truck, though they are for behind wheel mounting.

As I understand it there are 3 different FM 50 Series mufflers: the regular, which is supposed to be the loudest, the Delta Flow version which is quieter, and the SUV Performance version which is the quietest of the 50's. I assume the 50 series talked about in this thread is the standard, louder one. What is meant by three chamber FM? Is a 70 Series FM a 5 Chamber? If so, then the 50 Series SUV Performance muffler would be a 4 chamber. I plan to get a FM someday (50 SUV Perf) for my 300 I6 F150, but as my stock muffler gets older it also sounds better, so I am not in a big hurry.

I have a Flowmaster 40 - 3" single in/out with the origional Cat w/3" exhaust back. I also have shorty headers. My 1990 F250, 351, E40D, 124K miles, runs great and sounds great too. Its not real loud untill STAND on it. Then you can hear the Flowmaster at work. I use my truck for hunting too, so I don't want a lot of noise. You will like the 40!!!
