ObD-2 scanner

Just looking for some advice from the FTE crew. I have the need to pull transmission codes from my son's 2001 F350 V10. From what I understand I can do that with a can OBD-2 scanner. I have been looking for the last week on ebay and the internet and am just wondering what you guys have got that are more or less affordable that work. It would be nice to have something that does more that just give you codes but I don't want to spend over $150.00 or so, some of the PC based units look nice but a lot of them look like their not covered by somebody who can work with you to get it set up to work correctly if you need help. I would take it to get the codes pulled but everybody around here want's $80.00 to $100.00 and if we spend that we might as well spend a little more and have the dang tool!

Do you have a autozone near by? If yes, they will pull the codes for free.

Autozone code reader won't pull trans codes, I have an actron code puller, it won't do the job either. I need a better tool than just the basic code reader.

Autozone's reader won't pull any manufactor specific codes as is the problem with most tuner code readers as well(SCT, Edge, Bullydog etc). If you really want to pull everything then your going to need to get something along of the lines of Auto Enginuity(which I'm going to try to get the PDA version and the pc version in a month or so) and get the licenses(no matter which one you get rather auto enginuity or another one you'll have to buy licenses) for the vehicles that you might be looking at more often(unless your a mechanic on the side then you might want to get all of them). Dashdaq would also work as well, but again you have to get the license specific to a manufactor in order to view the other codes and have access to other sensors. If your really wanting to do it right, I would spend the scratch for a good one rather then trying to make do with a cheaper one that you may or may not be happy with.

A mechanic friend of mine said that only ford code scanners work for certain fords(as opposed to universal code scanners). Is this true? If so it may be a less expensive option if all hes trying to do is pull some codes. Or will the ford code scanners not pull tranny codes either..

CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool - EQUUS PRODUCTS, INC.

Got mine for $50 at a pawn shop. Have used it 3 times on my Excursion. It certainly isn't a Snap On MODIS but it's also a small fraction of the price. They're on Amazon new and used all the time.

Clearly the AutoEnginuity is the way to go, the only problem is the price, still not real bad but in my business (metal stampings mostly for the auto companies) with the cuts we have gone through so far this year I don't know if I could go top of the line right now.

Then I would wait til you could afford something like autoenginuity(why I'm waiting a month to get both the PC and pocket PC versions). I wouldn't go cheap, cost you more in the long run.

Just remember, if you are going to get a scanner, get one that also reads pending codes. Very valuable for finding a bad COP.
