i have a 93 explorer leaking coolant on back passenger side only leaks in the morning then goes away for the rest of the day and same thing happen today. its coolant causei see green. does anyone know what may of caused this?
I could also see the upper radiator hose causing this one. It leaks on to the top of the engine then trickles all the way back. The reason you only see it cold is because when it's hot, the coolant evaporates before it can drip off the engine.
1st thing I'd do would be to get a cooling system pressure tester (you can borrow one from Autozone if you are willing to leave a deposit), install that, and then you can poke around the engine while it's cold until you find the leak.
My 1991 with 180.000 miles did almost the same thing. Sometimes noticed antifreeze on the ground every few weeks. Pressure tested ok but still leaked on left side every so often. Put a can of stop leak with the metal flakes and has not leaked in over 1 1/2 years.
Not a big fan of this type of temperary fix but it worked.
leaking at the lower intake manifold, common, there is a water jacket passage back there.
Fix is to replace the saddle gasket. If you don't it will start leaking into the intake and kill/contaminate your O2 and CAT
Thanks for reporting back, about a 4-6hr fix if you are handy.
Don't cheap out on the gasket set, I used Felpro (silicone)
I removed the hood and front tires, set the truck down on roof shingles, so reduced the reaching.
Clean all mating surfaces careful not to gouge. I used solvent and a power washer to clean the intake manifold and rocker covers.
You will need an inch/pound torque wrench for the manifold studs, don't rush. The bottom gasket has a tendency to shift, leak again. Use a couple of guide studs to keep it aligned.
Use good high temp RTV on the manifold to head and head to block joints.
Install new thermostat and coolant while you have it open (test with water before loading coolant). Clean up any spillage (coolant kills animals and kids, sweet tasting)
